Veteran's Ministry

The Veteran's Ministry is a fine example of the outreach programs of Conway United Methodist Church.  It was conceived, implemented, and is now maintained by Chairman Lee Horn.  Lee is a veteran of both the Marines and the Army with a total of 32 years of service.  He served in Korea and Viet Nam, is the recipient of the Purple Heart, and of two Bronze Stars, awarded for heroic action and effort on the front during combat.

Once a month for the past eleven years, Lee has visited the veterans at the VA Center Nursing Home, taking with him blankets knitted by some of the ladies of our church, clothes, books and magazines.  The vets all look forward to these visits and are grateful for the donations.  In addition, Lee decorates the graves of the veterans in our church cemetery with flags and flowers on both Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  With money donated by the United Methodist Men's Fellowship (UMM), he has undertaken having the headstones cleaned on many of the Civil War, WWI, and WWII era gravesites.  He also conducts the flag pole services with the pre-school and assists the worship committee and the pastor in other services to commemorate our veterans.

To preserve for posterity in our church, Lee maintains the History and Honor Roll Plaques located in the Narthex of those veterans that have completed a survey form (which can be obtained in the office).  Lee is available to assist any widow or widower in filing for military benefits.  This particular ministry is of great personal interest to him.  Lee would welcome a call (407-273-3962) from anyone who would care to assist with his community outreach efforts.
